How do I cut down on drinking?

If you’re ready to reduce the risks of alcohol and feel better about your health, there are lots of positive changes you can make and ways to reduce the amount you drink.

Keep busy and get moving

There are so many different things to do in and around Salford, you don’t need to be sat around stuck in the same routine day after day. Get up and try something new, and you’ll keep your thoughts away from having a drink.

You could plan an alcohol-free picnic with the family, or arrange a trip to the cinema, the shops or your local park. You could take the dogs out for a walk somewhere new. Or you could head out for a bike ride around the area. Exercise is a great option to distract you from drinking, and it helps you feel even better too.

You can still enjoy a great social life

Cutting down on drinking doesn’t mean stopping going out or having a good time. There are lots of tips and tricks you can try on a night out to reduce the amount you drink, like choosing lower-strength options, or smaller glasses. Don’t forget to get your friends and family involved to help too.

    Give yourself days off

Cut back a little each day, and then go without alcohol completely on some days. You’ll reduce your dependency on drink, and start building up a tolerance. Swap a night-out for a fun, alcohol-free night-in with friends.

    Avoid binge drinking

Don’t cram all your drinks into a single session or night out. That will cause more damage to your physical and mental health. Spread your drinking over the week or month, with days off in between to give yourself a break.
